🥰 Intro
If you love the taste of traditional Indian onion pakodas but dread the mess (and calories!) of deep frying, this air fryer version is a total game-changer.
These pakodas are crunchy outside, tender inside, and packed with spicy, aromatic flavors — all with just a teaspoon of oil!
They’re perfect for your next evening chai session or as a party appetizer. Trust me, once you try them, you’ll never go back to frying.
🧅 Ingredients You’ll Need
Ingredient Quantity
Onion (thinly sliced) 1 large
Salt To taste
Gram flour (besan) ¾ cup
Rice flour 2 tbsp
Cilantro (finely chopped) 2 tbsp
Green chilies (finely chopped) 1–2
Turmeric powder ½ tsp
Red chili powder ½ tsp
Coriander powder ½ tsp
Carom seeds (ajwain) ½ tsp
Garam masala A pinch
Oil 1 tsp
Water 3–4 tbsp (as needed)
Oil spray For air fryer basket
👩🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Onion.
1. Slice one large onion — not too thick or thin.
2. Add salt and gently massage the onions with your hands (don’t crush them).
3. Let them rest for 10 minutes to release their natural moisture.
Step 2: Optional Flavor Boost – Roast the Besan
In a dry pan, lightly roast the gram flour for 2–3 minutes until fragrant.
This extra step enhances flavor, especially in the air fryer.
Step 3: Make the Batter
1. Add the roasted besan, rice flour, cilantro, green chilies, and spices to the onions.
2. Add 1 tsp oil and mix well.
3. Gradually pour water (3–4 tbsp) to form a thick, sticky batter.
💡 Tip: The batter should hold together when pressed — not runny.
Step 4: Air Fry the Pakoda.
1. Preheat air fryer to 340°F (170°C).
2. Grease basket lightly with oil spray.
3. Drop small portions of batter into the basket.
4. Air fry for 10 minutes at 340°F.
5. Spray oil again, then air fry at 400°F (200°C) for another 3–4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
