In Manipur, India, ongoing ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi tribes have led to over 140 deaths and the displacement of tens of thousands of people. Amidst this turmoil, a horrifying incident occurred when two women from the Kuki-Zomi community were stripped naked, sexually assaulted, and paraded by a mob of men. The video of this appalling incident went viral, prompting public outrage.

The two women explained in their complaint that they sought shelter in a nearby forest after their village was attacked. While the police were trying to take them to safety, the mob seized them and subjected them to unspeakable violence. Shockingly, no official report was made until the video surfaced, drawing attention to the severity of the issue.

The Supreme Court of India has also taken note of this distressing incident, terming the video "deeply disturbing." Chief Justice DY Chandrachud warned that the court would intervene if the government failed to act, scheduling the case for a hearing on 28 July.

Unfortunately, this use of sexual violence as a weapon in times of unrest is not unique to Manipur. History is filled with instances where women have become victims of hate, humiliation, and sexual abuse during times of conflict. During the Partition and the Bangladesh Liberation Movement, tens of thousands of women suffered sexual abuse. Similarly, in the Russia-Ukraine war, numerous reports of sexual violence by Russian soldiers against Ukrainian women surfaced.

Myanmar, Syria, and Ethiopia have also witnessed the horrifying impact of sexual violence on women during periods of unrest. In each case, rape and abuse are used to instill fear, punish, and enforce strict social orders.

The most disheartening aspect of such conflicts is that the safety and well-being of women often become the last priority. The justice system frequently fails to document these cases adequately, leading to elusive justice for the victims. As a result, women continue to suffer, enduring the traumatic consequences of these violent acts.

In conclusion, it is evident that rape and sexual violence are tragically used as tools of terror and humiliation during conflicts around the world. The suffering endured by women in such situations is immense, and urgent action is required to protect them and hold perpetrators accountable. It is crucial for societies and governments to address this grave issue to ensure a safer and more equitable world for women everywhere
